COVID UPDATE: March 19, 2021

There are some new travel restrictions in place this week, most notably in Peru and Ecuador. It’s possible to travel to most countries in Latin America at this time, but please keep in mind that all of the requirements are subject to change at any time with little to no warning.

Entry Restrictions By Country. More details are in the links to the US Embassy page for each country. The info here is written for US citizens. If you’re traveling from elsewhere, the requirements may be slightly different for you.

Argentina: Borders are currently closed to all international travelers (unless you are a resident of Argentina).

Belize: A negative PCR COVID test is required for entry into Belize. The test must be administered within 72 hours before you board your flight to Belize. You’ll need to travel with Gold Standard approved trip operators and accommodations.

Brazil: A negative PCR COVID test is required for entry into Brazil. The test must be administered within 72 hours before you board your flight to Brazil. You must fill out a traveler’s health declaration before arriving. Travel to Brazil is not recommended at this time by the CDC, due to high daily case numbers.

Chile: A negative PCR COVID test is required for entry into Chile. The test must be administered within 72 hours (3 days) before you board your international flight. All travelers must complete an obligatory 10 day quarantine upon their arrival in Chile. You have up to 24 hours to continue to your final destination before beginning quarantine, if your final destination is outside the Santiago Metropolitan Region. You will be able to leave quarantine with a negative PCR result based on a test taken on or after the 7th day of quarantine. You must remain in quarantine while you await the result.

Colombia: Entry is by flight only, not by land or sea. A negative PCR COVID test is required for entry into Colombia. The test must be administered within 96 hours (4 days) before you board your flight to Colombia.

Costa Rica: Entry is by flight only, directly from the US. Travelers must provide proof of medical insurance to cover any COVID related medical treatment or possible quarantine while in Costa Rica, for their entire length of stay. A negative COVID test is not required, but you must complete a Health Pass.

Ecuador & the Galapagos Islands: A negative PCR or Antigen COVID test is required for entry into Ecuador. The test must be administered within 72 hours (3 days) before you arrive in Quito or Guayaquil, Ecuador. You will need to fill out a health form stating you are in good health. If you are fully vaccinated, you can bring your vaccination certificate instead of getting the COVID test.

To travel to the Galapagos Islands, a PCR COVID test must be administered within 96 hours (4 days) before you board your flight from Quito or Guayaquil to the Galapagos Islands. The test for entry into Ecuador and entry to the Galapagos Islands can be the same if the timing works. You must take the PCR COVID test even if you are fully vaccinated. A certificate of vaccination cannot be used in place of the test for going to the Galapagos. You need to have a “safe passage” document that shows that you have a trip planned through a tour operator or a hotel. These will be provided by your trip operator.

Mexico: A COVID test is not required for entry into Mexico.

Peru: A negative PCR COVID test is required for entry into Peru. The test must be administered within 72 hours before you board your flight to Peru. You will need to complete an affidavit of health. When you arrive in Peru, you will need to take an antigen test. If the results are negative, you can continue on your way without quarantining. If you do not take the antigen test upon arrival, you will need to quarantine for a minimum of 6 days. At the 6 day mark, you can retake a PCR COVID test. If it is negative, you can leave quarantine. If it is positive, you will need to finish the 14 day quarantine period.

United States: All US citizens returning to the states after traveling must provide a negative COVID viral antigen test taken within 3 days before boarding your flight to the US.

We can help you arrange for COVID tests to be administered while you’re on your trip, in preparation for traveling from one country to another. The expenses of taking a COVID test are not included in your trip price, and will need to be paid locally.
