It’s possible for US citizens to travel to most countries in Latin America at this time, but please keep in mind that all of the requirements are subject to change at any time with little to no warning.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has lots of recommendations for international travel during COVID, for both travelers who are fully vaccinated and those who are not.
Entry Restrictions By Country: The info below is for US citizens, and is only a brief summary. More details are in the links to the US Embassy page for each country. If you’re traveling from elsewhere, the requirements may be different for you. Please check with your country’s embassy in each country.
Argentina: Borders are currently closed to all international travelers (unless you are a citizen or foreign resident of Argentina).
Belize: A negative PCR COVID test is required for entry into Belize. The test must be administered within 72 hours before you board your flight to Belize. You’ll need to travel with Gold Standard approved trip operators and accommodations.
Brazil: A negative PCR COVID test is required for entry into Brazil. The test must be administered within 72 hours before you board your flight to Brazil. You must fill out a traveler’s health declaration before arriving. Travel to Brazil is not recommended at this time by the CDC, due to high daily case numbers.
Chile: Borders are currently closed to all international travelers (unless you are a citizen or foreign resident of Chile).
Colombia: Entry is by flight only, not by land or sea. A negative PCR COVID test is required for entry into Colombia. The test must be administered within 96 hours (4 days) before you board your flight to Colombia.
Costa Rica: Entry is by flight only, directly from the US. Travelers must provide proof of medical insurance to cover any COVID related medical treatment or possible quarantine while in Costa Rica, for their entire length of stay. A negative COVID test is not required, but you must complete a Health Pass.
Ecuador & the Galapagos Islands: A negative PCR or Antigen COVID test is required for entry into Ecuador. The test must be administered within 72 hours (3 days) before you arrive in Quito or Guayaquil, Ecuador. You will need to fill out a health form stating you are in good health. If you are fully vaccinated, you can bring your vaccination certificate instead of getting the COVID test.
To travel to the Galapagos Islands, a PCR COVID test must be administered within 96 hours (4 days) before you board your flight from Quito or Guayaquil to the Galapagos Islands. The test for entry into Ecuador and entry to the Galapagos Islands can be the same if the timing works. You must take the PCR COVID test even if you are fully vaccinated. A certificate of vaccination cannot be used in place of the test for going to the Galapagos. You need to have a “safe passage” document that shows that you have a trip planned through a tour operator or a hotel. These will be provided by your trip operator.
Mexico: A COVID test is not required for entry into Mexico.
Peru: A negative PCR COVID test is required for entry into Peru. The test must be administered within 72 hours before you board your flight to Peru. You will also need to complete an affidavit of health. When you arrive in Peru, you will need to take an antigen test within a day of arrival. The antigen test can be take at the airport, medical center, or at your hotel. If you have a connecting domestic flight, you can take the antigen test upon arrival at your final destination. If the results are negative, you can continue your trip without quarantining. If you do not take the antigen test upon arrival, or if the results are positive, you will need to quarantine for 14 days
United States: All US citizens returning to the states after traveling must provide a negative COVID viral antigen test taken within 3 days before boarding your flight to the US.
We can help you arrange for COVID tests to be administered while you’re on your trip, in preparation for traveling from one country to another. The expenses of taking a COVID test are not included in your trip price, and will need to be paid locally.
