Finch Bay a GREAT Experience!

by karen d., Proficient, Jul 17, 2009

We spent 8 days at Finch Bay Hotel at the end of June, 2009. It was the beginning of cool/dry season and temps were great- in the morning about 70 and rising to mid 80's. Very serious sun when we had it, used SPF 50-60 all the time and were just fine.

The hotel is pristine- a beautiful tiled pool that invited local wildlife to land in the am and pm. A great outdoor bar and seating area, with the "private" bay just in front of the property. It's a local treasure but empty almost every weekday.I hear that weekends are busy with the local families. Didn't bother us!

The chef was a wizard with fish- we don't - make that didn't- like fish before we had his inspired Euadorian creations. Each night he has 3 options, a fresh fish, a vegetarian dish and an "other", be it beef, chicken or ....! Hubby and I would always try 2 entrees and share- the veggie options were excellent too!

Breakfast was a banquet with several hot dishes, a sou chef to create egg dishes al la carte, and different fresh juices every morning that were tasty and unique. Lots of different fresh rolls and breads. They even had a variety of teas to try along with their fresh hot coffee and leche.

We had chosen the all inclusive package with all meals and an excursion every day but 1. The excursions were on their 57' yacht, the Sea Finch, and the lunches on the yacht were excellent! The trips to various islands were very well done, with 2 naturalists assigned to the group, however small it might be. Typically we had 14 or less folks on the boat with us, sharing 2 naturalists.

The naturalists would split the group into 2 segments based on language. 2 days we had a Japanese group, so they went with one naturalist, and the english speaking folks went with another. Each day, the naturalists made each grouop feel as if they were the only people on the islands: spacing the groups out to maximize the experience of being alone with the animals.

I can't say enough good things about Finch Bay Eco- hotel. We enjoyed the food, the location, the boat, the excursions, everything! Free internet was great, too. I would advise it for everyone, and especially someone with kids- the pool was fantastic at the end of a day of excursions! PS: no TV or newspapers... but, when you look up at all those stars at night, you have some great entertainment!

Weather

HOT SEASON (warm-rainy)
From December through May:
Air Temperature: Average air temperature in December is (25.4°C) 77°F, while in May is (26.8°C) 80°F. Peak month is March with (29.1°C) 84°F. Humidity fluctuates between 65% - 80%.
Water Temperature: Average surface water temperature in December is (23.2°C) 74°F, while in May is (24.5°C) 76°F. Peak month is March with (25.5°C) 78°F. Visibility of the water ranges from 30 to 80 feet. In unusually warm years (like El Niño years) waters can even reach (29°C) 84°F.
Precipitation (rainfall): ranges from 38 mm (December) to 62 mm (May), with its peak rainy at 87 mm (March).
Overall pattern: while this season is the one that gives rain to the islands, it should not be sold as the "rainy" season. Tropical showers are not too overwhelming, and a typical day may include a shower or two that will only last for an hour or so. There are times where for a whole week not a raindrop is experienced. The ocean is generally calm due to the absence of the south east trade winds.
Biological implications: all species which are land-based (like finches, mockingbirds, lizards, land iguanas, tortoises) will reproduce at this time of the year since there are plenty of food sources available: plants for insects, seeds for finches, flowers for iguanas, etc. Perhaps one of the few exceptions to this rule are the Great Frigatebirds on Tower Island which being seabirds reproduce during the hot season.
Snorkeling conditions: since the water temperature reaches the "true" tropical range, one can expect generally calm waters, virtually non strong currents, and high chances of visibility. Daily activities will be arranged in such a way that guests spend a great amount of time snorkeling as our way to add enjoyment to this marine resource. Most snorkeling times will be of no less than 90 minutes.

DRY SEASON (windy-dry)
From June through November:
Air Temperature: Average air temperature in June is (25.2°C) 77°F, while in November is (24.4°C) 76°F. Peak month is September with (23.1°C) 74°F. Humidity fluctuates between 35% - 60%.
Water Temperature: Average surface water temperature in June is (23.3°C) 74°F, while in November is (22.8°C) 73°F. Peak month is September with (21.6°C) 70°F. Visibility of the water ranges from 15 to 50 feet. In unusually dry years (like La Niña years) waters can even reach 61°F.
Precipitation (rainfall): ranges only from 35 mm (June) to 13 mm (November), with its peak dry at 9.9 mm (September).
Overall pattern: this season is the one that gives the islands their totally untropical look: dry, windy, barren. Even though the term "cold" season is sometimes applied, moremember that such term does not sell a destination that is geographically tropical. There's hardly any rain, but the islands may seem somewhat moist as an early mist called "garua" covers the sky. Usually this layer of fine drizzle burns off by mid morning. The seas are moderately strong; surge, choppy waters and some waves should be expected. This is all due to the active presence of the south east trade winds.
Biological implications: all species which are land-based, but depend entirely upon the ocean's productivity (food available, like plankton) will reproduce during this season. This includes blue-footed boobies, waved albatrosses, sea lions.
Snorkeling conditions: since the water temperature reaches the "untrue" tropical range, one can expect generally waters with some current, and a slight decrease in visibility due to the amount of plankton particles suspended in the water column. This is the snorkeling season where a shortie wet suit is more likely to provide higher comfort in the water for our guests. Note that none of our ships carry wet suits for rent. Guests must bring their own.

TESTIMONIALS

I would recommend this trip to a friend in a second. The trip to the Galapagos was Outstanding. The Letty was wonderful; the naturalists were the greatest; the food was superb; the crew excellent; (I\'m running out of adjectives) I would recommend the whole thing and your agency also. You really provided excellent service and information. I felt I could email or call you with any questions and I knew you would answer quickly and I felt honestly. For just taking a chance finding you on the internet, I was very fortunate.

-- Joyce P, Galapagos Islands on the Eric, Letty, Flamingo I

The Inca trail trek can only be described as magical. I tried my best to be cynical, but it didn’t work. This trip was pure magic and absolutely perfect. The logistics of the trip were impeccable. The ground transportation was on time and they made sure I was able to obtain my boarding pass and pay the airport tax at each leg of the trip. Out on the hike, my guide Oswaldo was fabulous. The food on the trail was amazing. The chef created simple and fresh meals that were bursting with local flavor.

Just returned from Costa Rica last night ... trip was a GREAT SUCCESS! We all thank you VERY MUCH for arranging the trip.

We’ve been home just over a week now and I just wanted to send you a quick note to let you just how fantastically well everything went! Ok, so we did end up paying the full whack (which I’ve decided just not to think about!). However, we had a fantastic guide and everything ran really smoothly and we had a fantastic time. From being collected from the hotel (Vieja Cuba which was lovely) to being looked after once we got to the Galapagos it was all just perfect, so thank you very much for being an important part of our fabulous trip. Cheers Greg !
