Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 CUSCO / TOMACAYA / TOCOBAMBA (Friday)

Drive over Tika-Tika pass with a first view of Mt. Salkantay and Humantay in the horizon. Cross the plateau of Anta (Antapampa) an area that's considered the breadbasket of Cusco, important for grains and cattle. We reach the pass of Limatambo with an amazing view of both mountains and the panorama of the lush agricultural valley below. We visit the ruins of Tarawasi with its long asymmetric Inca stone wall. Leaving Limatambo we drive up a side-valley to the village of Tomacaya, the road head. From this village of farmers we will have great views of the Limatambo valley and down into the Apurimac Valley towards Curawasi. A two – hour hike uphill will bring us to Tocobamba at 3400m (11,152 ft) where we camp near a small stream. (Distance: 4 kms, Time: 2 hours).

Day 2 TOCOBAMBA / TINKOC / COLLPA (Saturday)

Leaving our campsite we begin our ascent towards a pass at 3,950 m (12,956 ft), called Muyuhorko for about four hours where we take our lunch break. Here you find a pre-Inca ceremonial site from where we can get an astounding circumspective view of Mt. Salkantay, Humantay, Yanantay and Palcay and beyond Ausangate, Ninaparayoc and Qoylluritiy as well as the Pampa de Anta and the Pass of Huilki. We descend to the Tinkoc river at 3500 m (11,480 ft), and camp at Collpa. (Distance: 11 kms, Time: 6 hours).

Day 3 COLLPA / TOCTO / SISAYPAMPA (Sunday)

Leaving Collpa we head up the valley to the confluence of two rivers at 3,800m / 12,464 ft. We take the left fork up over a pass at Tocto at 4,900m (16,072 ft) a long slow ascent uphill. We reach this Pass and have Mt. Salkantay, Yanahorco and Palcay right opposite with views of the Pampaccahua valley and our campsite below at Sisaypampa 4,200m (13,120 ft). At first a steep descent and then a two-hour hike down the valley floor brings us to our campsite, with a dominating view of the eastern face of the mountain. (Distance: 12 km, Time: 8 hours).

Day 4 SISAYPAMPA / PAMPACAHUA / PAUCARCANCHA (Monday)

The trail continues to the end of the valley, turns north and enters a wider valley called Pampacahua with an Inca canal running through the middle of it and small settlements of farmers along its edges. At the end of the Pampa the trail begins to get steeper as we pass the tree line, continuing to our campsite at Paucarcancha, our first Inca site, and the confluence of the Pampacahua and Keska valleys. Here we camp in the vicinity of the ruins at 3,150m (10,260 ft) (Trekking: 5-6 hours, Distance: 10 kms).

Day 5 PAUCARCANCHA / HUAYLLABAMBA / LLULLUCHAPAMPA (Tuesday)

A slow day at low altitude at first, visiting the village of Huayllabamba, from where a steep ascent brings us to the Huayruro stream at 3,400m (11,084 ft). Here we stop for lunch at Yunkachimpa. At the village we meet a group coming from the Urubamba Valley and leave our pack animals behind changing to a new crew of porters. From here we cross over to the Llullucha gorge and traverse a unique forest of Unca trees, a native species, which nowadays is hard to find except in isolated areas. We have now entered the Machu Picchu Sanctuary and will see fewer people living in the area. Once out of the forest we reach Llulluchapampa, with a view of Mt. Huayanay overlooking our campsite at 3,750m (12,225 ft) (Trekking: 5-6 hours, 8 kms).

Day 6 LLULLUCHAMPAMPA / RUNKURAQAY/ SAYACMARCA / PHUYUPATAMARCA
(Wednesday)

A steady ascent on an Inca Trail up to the Warmiwañusqa pass at 4,200m (13,692 ft) affords a magnificent view of our ascent and the trail ahead of us. We descend on a reconstructed Inca Trail down to the Pacaymayo River to then ascend again to the ruins of Runkuraqay and the second pass at 4,050m (13,200 ft). From here we walk down to the site at Sayacmarca at 3,850m (12,551 ft) on the original Inca Trail, passing a dry lake and the first signs of the cloud forest. A beautiful location overlooking the Aobamba Valley, it affords a respite for a leisurely walk through its imposing structures. Continue along the ridge through amazing landscapes, viewing Mt. Salcantay from the western side and Mt. Pumasillo, a silhouette to the north on the horizon. Walking through a rolling flagstone trail we arrive at Phuyupatamarca (the village on the edge of the clouds) in whose vicinity we camp. (Trekking: 7-8 hours, Distance 14kms)

Day 7 PHUYUPATAMARCA / INTIPATA / WIÑAY WAYNA / MACHU PICCHU (Thursday)

An early departure today will have us trekking along a buttress and passing Phuyupatamarca ruins, the flagstoned trail winds sharply down into the cloud forest to the ruins of Wiñay Wayna located below the ridge on the same water course as the previous site, it has well restored Inca Ruins. After a two hour walk through a cloud forest covered Inca Trail we arrive at Machu Picchu the way the Incas used to come, watching the magnificent citadel at our feet from Intipunku, the door of the sun. Overnight at a hotel in Machu Picchu Pueblo. (Optional overnight at el Pueblo or Sanctuary luxury hotel available). Dinner on your own. (Trekking: 6-7 hours, Distance 10kms).

Day 8 MACHU PICCHU / CUSCO (Friday)

The whole day can be dedicated to explore these extraordinary Inca remains, including a visit to Wayna Picchu, the mountain overlooking the site. In the mid-afternoon train takes you back to Cusco, transfer to your hotel. Lunch and dinner on your own.

Provider Social and Environmental Responsibility

At Explorandes we firmly believe that responsible tourism is the only way of guaranteeing the sustainable development of this activity for present and future generations. As a result of this belief ever since we started, we involved the local communities and worked with them as suppliers of goods and services, helping them by contributing with medicines, school materials and sanitary issues. Tied in with this, was our commitment to the environment trying to minimize footprint and respecting the traditional way of life of the peoples through whose territory we passed.

At the turn of the century we decided to systematize the good practices that we had instituted over the last 25 years, so we committed to becoming an ISO 14000 certified company since this involves implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS), where we had to develop internationally accepted standards. After two years of effort, at the beginning of 2003, we managed to obtain the ISO 14001 certification, accomplishment which we are proud of because we managed to achieve it as a team commitment of our office and field staff working together. This, however, means we work towards a continuing improvement of our performance and also implies passing a yearly audit where goals and monitoring activities have to be achieved. In early 2004 we passed the first external audit of our EMS.

Through our ISO 14001 we have managed to reduce the generation of solidwaste by 50%, substitute traditional cleaning products by biodegradable products, reducing our impact on water courses and the environment. We have also managed to educate and influence our field staff and their communities to improve their quality of life by enhancing their interaction with their own environment. Our work in this area has also caused other operators to improve their environmental performance since it implied improving their standards to be able to compete.

As pioneers in adventure travel in the Andes we are firmly committed to maintain a leadership role and set an example within our sector and we are therefore proud to be the first in Latin America to have certified as an internationally recognized company that has an Environmental Quality certification.

Our Environmental and Social Policy is based on the following principles:

Consider environmental management a company priority, committing ourselves to complying with applicable legislation and other voluntary compliances established by us.

Annually review our quantifiable goals to reduce to the maximum possible levels the generation of solid waste, pollution of water courses, the risks of fire and the disturbance of wildlife caused by our activities, products and services.

Rationally use tourist attractions and the surrounding natural resources preventing their unnecessary abuse and/or consumption minimizing impacts caused to the lifestyle of communities in harmony with the landscape, flora and fauna.

Hire, whenever possible, local employees and suppliers, purchasing local and environmentally friendly products for our operations.

Promote the proactive participation and training of workers, clients and suppliers in the maintenance of the Environmental Management System (EMS), involving and committing them to the compliance of the environmental goals through continuous improvement.

Travel Provider

Provider Name

Explorandes

Why should I choose this provider?

It seems like a long time ago that myself and close friends, some still members of our team, began exploring the surroundings of Cusco, backpacking into remote areas where Andean people still lived immersed in their ancient traditions and beliefs, practicing subsistence agriculture in inaccessible valleys.

We started 30 years ago as a real adventure company. We like to work doing what we enjoy most: hiking, climbing, river-rafting, being in contact with the Andean culture and searching to discover the hidden secrets and natural beauty as well as the recent past of the Andean back country.

As the first company to commit to developing trekking and river-running trips, we pioneered many routes around the Cordilleras of the Andes, opening old Inca Trails and ancient colonial pack trails to remote mountain areas.

Nowadays, Explorandes is a regional tour operator. Our company has evolved and we have more and more adventure, soft adventure and cultural programs as well as specialized itineraries. We are also very strong in tailor and custom trips that suit particular needs of individuals and groups with special interests.

Moreover, we have worked hard during 3 years to achieve the ISO 14001 certification and finally we obtained it in 2003, being the first adventure travel operator in Latin America to receive such a certification, and possibly worldwide.

Our team is the most valued asset we have. We are all dedicated to serve our clients above and beyond their expectations. This knowledge has been formed through 30 years of Explorandes as a consequence of the high standards of services that tourism demands, allowing us to offer our clients an exceptional service. Our staff is well-trained in health, safety and environmental matters. We have clear policies and abide by the highest standards of quality and environmental responsibility thereby preserving nature, as well as our ancient treasures sprinkled all over this megadiverse country full of footprints from the pre-columbian past.

We are more than willing to put on that extra effort to make a trip extraordinary and beyond your expectations assuring you that we are big enough to take care of you and small enough to care about you.

Explore the Andes with us! Come and enjoy our passion and have the time of your life!

Alfredo Ferreyros
President

TESTIMONIALS

I would recommend this trip to a friend in a second. The trip to the Galapagos was Outstanding. The Letty was wonderful; the naturalists were the greatest; the food was superb; the crew excellent; (I\'m running out of adjectives) I would recommend the whole thing and your agency also. You really provided excellent service and information. I felt I could email or call you with any questions and I knew you would answer quickly and I felt honestly. For just taking a chance finding you on the internet, I was very fortunate.

-- Joyce P, Galapagos Islands on the Eric, Letty, Flamingo I

The Inca trail trek can only be described as magical. I tried my best to be cynical, but it didn’t work. This trip was pure magic and absolutely perfect. The logistics of the trip were impeccable. The ground transportation was on time and they made sure I was able to obtain my boarding pass and pay the airport tax at each leg of the trip. Out on the hike, my guide Oswaldo was fabulous. The food on the trail was amazing. The chef created simple and fresh meals that were bursting with local flavor.

-- Terry B, Inca Trail 5-day with Andean Adventures

Just returned from Costa Rica last night ... trip was a GREAT SUCCESS! We all thank you VERY MUCH for arranging the trip.

-- Bob Fenchel, Custom Costa Rica with Camino Travel

We’ve been home just over a week now and I just wanted to send you a quick note to let you just how fantastically well everything went! Ok, so we did end up paying the full whack (which I’ve decided just not to think about!). However, we had a fantastic guide and everything ran really smoothly and we had a fantastic time. From being collected from the hotel (Vieja Cuba which was lovely) to being looked after once we got to the Galapagos it was all just perfect, so thank you very much for being an important part of our fabulous trip. Cheers Greg !
