Why should I choose this trip? What makes it better (different) than other trips?
Cachalote is a charming 96 foot schooner overall, with 86.6 feet on deck, offering First Class service. Passengers can relax on one of the three wooden decks while sailing or just anchored in a harbor. The small group size means a more intimate experience both with the Islands and with your fellow passengers, yet the boat offers ample space for relaxing. ...view more details
What kind of person will enjoy this trip?
This trip is great for those of you who would like to get out and see the galapagoes islands in a more intimate fashion than riding aboard a large cruise. Participants do not need boating experience but should be prepared for life on board. For those who want a sense of adventure, yacht travel will be exhilarating. ...view more details
Plazas Island: This island is full of life. There are colonies of sea lions and land iguanas. On the steep banks it is possible to see a great number of birds such as nesting tropic birds and fork-tailed seagulls One of the highlights of this day is enjoying the beautiful view from atop the steep banks and strolling along the base of the cliff where frigate birds and pelicans can be seen gliding close to the cliff. The Opuntia cacti grow here too and the vegetation changes color according to the season of the year.
Day 02 (Thursday): Santa Cruz: Charles Darwin Station and Highlands
The Charles Darwin research station is located in the town of Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island. A ten minute walk from the Center of town.
At The Charles Darwin Research Station you'll learn first hand of the conservation and research efforts in the Galapagos islands. See the tortoise hatchlings and breeding programs which are saving several races of tortoises from extinction. Tour the Van Straelen Exhibit Hall. For most, this will be your only opportunity to see the giant Galapagos tortoises.
The Charles Darwin Research Station conducts and facilitates research in the Galapagos Islands and the Galapagos Marine Resources Reserve of Ecuador. The Darwin Station is part of the Charles Darwin Foundation for the Galapagos Islands, an international non-profit organization dedicated to scientific research in the Galapagos Islands since 1959.
The Darwin Station provides:
* Information and technical assistance for the Galapagos National Park Service and other branches of the government of Ecuador.
* Support for resident and visiting scientists who work in Galapagos.
* Environmental education for island communities and schools and for the visitors that come to Galapagos each year.
* Hands-on training in science, education, and conservation for Ecuadorian university students who participate in the Darwin Station's volunteer and scholarship programs.
While the highlands offer the lush humid zone, with its vegetation of Miconia bushed, Scalesia and inactive volcanic comes. Santa Cruz has more endemic plants than any other island in the Galapagos. The Galapagos tortoises can be seen in their natural habitat here.
Day 03 (Friday): Española: Gardner Bay and Punta Suarez
Punta Suarez offers the visitor quite a display in wildlife: Marine Iguanas with copper red patches, Swallow Tailed Gulls, the endemic Long Billed Mocking bird, Finches, Masked and Blue Footed Boobies, Oystercatchers, Sea Lions and Lava Lizards. This is the only island where the Waved Albatross is to be seen during the breeding season - April to December.
Gardner Bay is located on the northeastern coast and is an excellent swimming and snorkeling site.
Day 04 (Saturday): Floreana
At Point Cormorant we visit a Flamingo Lagoon where other species of shore birds may also be seen. Snorkel at Devil´s Crown, a submerged volcanic cone.
At Post Office Bay you may leave letters like the whalers did in the 18th century in a wooden barrel mailbox.
Day 05 (Sunday): Isabela: Elizabeth Bay and Punta Moreno
Elizabeth Bay: Here you will observe Flightless Cormorants, Brown Pelicans, Rays, Marine Turtles, Sea lions and Lava Herons. There is also a large area of giant red Mangroves
Punta Moreno’s main attractions are black water lagoons, flamingos and white cheeked pintail ducks.
Day 06 (Monday): Fernandina: Punta Espinoza/ Isabela: Urvina Bay
At Punta Espinoza Flightless Cormorant, Pelicans, Sea Lions, Sally Light Foot Crabs and an abundance of Marine Iguanas can be seen along the shores of one of world’s most active volcanoes.
Urvina Bay: Here you can explore the remains of a coral reef uplifted from the bottom of the sea. Flightless cormorants, Brown pelicans, Large marine iguanas, Rays, Marine turtles and seashells, as well as, Historic graffiti can be seen.
Day 07 (Tuesday): James Island: Puerto Egas and Bartolomé
At Puerto Egas, you will see Galapagos Fur Seals in pools cut into lava cliffs and there is a good chance of spotting the Galapagos Hawk, the Galapagos Dove, and Vermilion Flycatcher. Tucked behind Espumilla Beach are salt water lagoons where Flamingos and White Cheeked Pintail Ducks may be seen.
Bartolomé: Nowhere else is the geological history of the Islands better portrayed than here. Impressive volcanic scenery.
Day 08 (Wednesday): Black Turtle Cove / Baltra
Black Turtle Cove, a red mangrove lagoon on Santa Cruz , is a nursery for many sharks and rays. It is also a great location to observe mating sea turtles, after all the site takes its name for the black sea turtles that mate in these calm waters.
There are large groups of resting white-tip reef sharks, schools of golden rays and spotted eagle rays, and a few juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks and black-tip sharks. The water is nearly mirror-calm, and you often use paddles instead of the loud panga engines to move around the area.

Galapagos Islands on the Cachalote
by Monica C., Apr 11, 2007
The trip was excellent and the ship and the guides were great. The guide was very knowledgeable and the crew always accommodating. The hikes at each location are only limited to one group at a time, so it's never overcrowded or "touristy".
The hikes were usually 2-3 hours, but a couple of the hikes were on lava rock which makes the terrain a little more difficult.

Provider FAQ's
Q: Where are the Galapagos Islands?
A: The Galapagos Islands (or Archipelago de Colon) is a Province of Ecuador located 600 miles (1000 kilometers) west of the Ecuadorian coast. They lie directly on the equator.
Q: What is the climate like?
A: As the islands lie directly on the Equator, you can expect it to be warm for most of the year. The hottest season is generally from December to April with average temperatures ranging from a low of 70 to a high of 84 F (22 - 31 C). It is during this period that you may expect short but heavy showers. The sea is generally calm this time of the year and the water temperature warmer. May to November is considered the "cool" season with average temperatures ranging from a low of 68 to a high of 82 F (19 – 27 C).
Q: How do we get there?
A: From North America and Europe there are daily flights to Quito and Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Q: How do we get to Galapagos from Quito and Guayaquil?
A: Flights to Galapagos depart daily from both Quito and Guayaquil. We will arrange the Galapagos flight for you. As boat owners in Galapagos we will block book spaces on those flights to ensure our passengers are on the flight to meet the boat.
Q: May we fly to Galapagos from Quito and just back to Guayaquil (or vice versa)?
A: Yes, we would be able to arrange that for you.
Q: Are all your prices in US dollars?
A: All of our rates are quoted in US dollars.
Q: What is included in the rates for the boats?
A: The boat rates includes accommodations and all meals aboard the boat, island sightseeing, all guide and lecture services, transfers in the islands and between the airport and yacht in Galapagos.

TESTIMONIALS
I would recommend this trip to a friend in a second. The trip to the Galapagos was Outstanding. The Letty was wonderful; the naturalists were the greatest; the food was superb; the crew excellent; (I\'m running out of adjectives) I would recommend the whole thing and your agency also. You really provided excellent service and information. I felt I could email or call you with any questions and I knew you would answer quickly and I felt honestly. For just taking a chance finding you on the internet, I was very fortunate.
-- Joyce P, Galapagos Islands on the Eric, Letty, Flamingo I
The Inca trail trek can only be described as magical. I tried my best to be cynical, but it didn’t work. This trip was pure magic and absolutely perfect.
The logistics of the trip were impeccable. The ground transportation was on time and they made sure I was able to obtain my boarding pass and pay the airport tax at each leg of the trip.
Out on the hike, my guide Oswaldo was fabulous.
The food on the trail was amazing. The chef created simple and fresh meals that were bursting with local flavor.
-- Terry B, Inca Trail 5-day with Andean Adventures
Just returned from Costa Rica last night ... trip was a GREAT SUCCESS! We all thank you VERY MUCH for arranging the trip.
-- Bob Fenchel, Custom Costa Rica with Camino Travel
We’ve been home just over a week now and I just wanted to send you a quick note to let you just how fantastically well everything went! Ok, so we did end up paying the full whack (which I’ve decided just not to think about!). However, we had a fantastic guide and everything ran really smoothly and we had a fantastic time. From being collected from the hotel (Vieja Cuba which was lovely) to being looked after once we got to the Galapagos it was all just perfect, so thank you very much for being an important part of our fabulous trip.
Cheers Greg !
