Frequently Asked Questions

How should I tip in Bolivia?

All tipping is, of course, at your own discretion and you are under no obligation to tip. In the unlikely event that you are not satisfied with the service you received, your tip (or lack of) will reflect this.

We suggest a range of US$6 to US$12 to your guide per day depending on the level of satisfaction.  Also, if you have hired private transportation for an entire day, we suggest we tip you tip your driver $3-$5 a day.

A service charge is normally added to restaurant and hotel bills but it is customary to add a 5 to 10% tip. Hotel porters also expect a small tip. Taxi drivers are not usually tipped unless they are hired for a full day, in which case 10% is acceptable.

*** When exchanging money, ask for the cash in small denominations, as there are chronic problems with change. In the larger cities, major international cards can be used at ATMs and are widely accepted in many places.
